The Berau River in East Kalimantan is one of the narrow shipping lanes that is vital for logistics transportation and economic activities, especially coal transportation. This shipping lane has narrow, winding and fast-flowing characteristics that require high alertness and skills in navigation. This study discusses the procedures for maneuvering in the narrow shipping lane of the Berau River and the formulation of the problems raised are the procedures for maneuvering ships in the narrow shipping lane of the Berau River, inhibiting factors during maneuvering and efforts to overcome sudden damage to the steering pump. This study aims to analyze the procedures for maneuvering ships in the narrow shipping lane of the Berau River, identify inhibiting factors for maneuvering ships and determine emergency response steps when damage occurs to the ship's steering system. The research method used is descriptive qualitative with a field observation approach, direct interviews with ship crews and documentation during the researcher's sea practice on the MV. ABM SATRIA. The results of the study indicate that the maneuvering procedures carried out include observing the depth of the channel, checking the steering and navigation systems such as radars, GPS, AIS, echo sounder and planning based on the ebb and flow of water. The identified inhibiting factors include strong currents, sharp bends, bad weather conditions, and technical damage, such as sudden damage to the rudder pump. The results of this study are expected to be a reference for sailors and cadets in improving the ability of ship maneuvers safely and efficiently as well as being practical input for the development of standard operating procedures for shipping in narrow waters.
